1909 University of Kansas Football Team Fold-out postcard with Pig Mascot! In 1909 Kansas University(also called Kansas State University at the time) played in the Missouri Valley Conference and won their first eight games of the season, in which they were only scored on two times, before losing to Missouri in the final championship game of the season. Missouri was also unbeaten going into the game. Handwritten notations by a very happy Missouri fan, Warren Orr, to his mother, Mrs. J. H. Orr of Lawton, Oklahoma. Warren Henry Orr went on to become a very famous Judge and law firm owner in the Chicago area. All that being said, the highlight of the postcard is the Mascot, a Chester White hog laying front and center in the panoramic photo taken by Squires of Lawrence, Kansas. This pig went by the name of Don Carlos and was only used as a mascot for the 1909 season. The University of Kansas Archives has a postcard like this on its website, the only other one found doing an online search. A very, very scarce and desirable piece of history! In very nice condition.
