Very scarce image of J. Lee Richmond, of Brown University and Worcester Worcesters also known as the Brown Stocking and Ruby Legs, the first Pitcher to throw a perfect game on June 12, 1880 when Worcester took on Cleveland. The offered vintage photo was made by taking a picture of the original tintype and is documented on the back of the piece and date stamped Aug 24, 1926. Also included is the old envelope from 1926 where the image was stored for many decades, with penned notations by the previous owner which originated from the archives of the San Francisco Examiner (erroneously reversing the color of the infield and outfield uniforms). Undoubtedly the image was probably used for a newspaper article in the 1920's. While not contemporary to the 1880 piece, this makes for an affordable image of Richmond and the Worcester team. Richmond also played for the Boston Red Stockings in 1879, the Providence Grays in 1883 and the Cincinatti Red Stockings in 1886.
