Brockelman Fall 2018 Auction

Very scarce 1929 Stevens-Davis "Men of America" complete 52 card set in the original box with the promotional flyer. These individual booklets were distributed weekly to company employees to be used as a motivational tool to help inspire the workers to strive for excellence. This is a very nice group of these scarce eight-page booklets with colorful covers, most displaying just normal wear from light handling and reading, some do have light horizontal fold marks, we would call most G/VG. The flyer has had the words "of fifty-two talks" darkened out. Each booklet measures 2 1/2" x 4 1/4" inches and features an image of a legendary American on the front with a biography presented on the interior pages. Includes booklets of Edison, T. Roosevelt, Will Rogers, Orville Wright, Coolidge, Firestone, Ford, Judge Landis (baseball), Lindbergh, Washington, Franklin, and Lincoln. The key booklet in the set is #35, entitled "American Athletes," featuring golf legend Bobby Jones on the front cover and baseball Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby on the reverse(folded). This is an affordable set that has been read, handled and enjoyed but is all there. "Men of America" booklets are rarely offered in complete set form, and are highly prized by historical collectors, miniature book collectors, and prewar nonsport-card collectors. In fact an internet search only revealed a few complete sets with box and flyer, selling in the last few years.
